Chemical Product Design
Abstract
Projects involving chemical product design instead of chemical process design were assigned in the capstone design class. Three product designs were completed. One was technology to control zebra mussel infestation in water-intake pipes in power plants or water treatment facilities. A second was an electrolytic device to disinfect swimming pools without bulk addition of chlorine-containing chemicals. The third was a refrigerator in which cooling is accomplished without a compressor by using the magnetocaloric effect present in certain materials. These projects permit students to apply chemical engineering principles to new products instead of to existing chemical processes. These projects also provide an excellent opportunity for an interdisciplinary design experience.
