A Graduate Course in Theory and Methods of Research

Abstract

The increasingly diverse backgrounds of today’s graduate students have resulted in a wide range of ideas about what graduate school actually entails and what is expected of the students. Therefore, a graduate course titled “Theory and Methods of Research” was developed and is required for all chemical engineering graduate students at Michigan Technological University. The goal of this course is to systematically present many of the common skills that make up the graduate school experience. These skills include communication, research, and professional topics. Frequent and effective student/advisor communication is also emphasized.

Joseph H. Holles, Michigan Technological University

Joseph H. Holles is an assistant professor of chemical engineering at Michigan Technological University. He received his B.S. in chemical engineering in 1990 from Iowa State University and his M.E. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1998 and 2000, respectively. His research area is nanoscale materials design and synthesis for catalytic applications with an emphasis on structure/property relationships and in-situ characterization.
