Abstract

Canopy science is changing and expanding in many directions. Analogous to a patchwork quilt, it is composed of a variety of designs and materials. Since the first canopy conference in 1994, new ideas have been forthcoming. The years between the two conferences saw the advent of larger and improved collaborative studies. Canopy cranes and other field sites offered more long-term opportunities for canopy researchers to share data and integrate ideas. Emphasis was placed on the role of indigenous people, since local people are the stewards of the forest over the long term, not the visiting researchers.
