Abstract

In a field study at Ujarras, Costa Rica, the effects of the application of organic matter (chicken manure plus sawdust, 3,000 kg/ha), the nematicide aldicarb (5 kg a.i./ha) and elimination of the previous crop residues, on nematode populations in the soil, the severity of their attack, yield, and other variables of celery, cv. Golden Self Blanching, were evaluated. Aldicarb significantly reduced the root-knot index caused by Meloidogyne incognita 46 and 94 days after transplanting, and plant vigor 46 days after transplanting. Organic matter significantly reduced the yield of celery, and M. incognita density 46 days after transplanting; it also caused a significant increase on free-living nematode densities and root-knot index 46 and 94 days after transplanting, and the numbers of root-knot larvae on the soil at harvest time. The elimination of the previous crop residues significantly reduced the root-knot index 94 days after transplanting.
