Immense tidal flat at Abu Dhabi on the southern margin of the Persian Gulf (in the Arab world sometimes also referred to as the "Arabian Gulf'). An algal crust is segmented by desiccation cracks, and overlies a thick layer of gypsum. This is a classic example of 'actuogeology' where a modern example provides a prototype for many Paleozoic dolomite limestones and evaporites. (Photo: Shoji Fujii, Japan, 3 March 1994).Downloads
