Effective Laboratory Education with TEXTILE: Tutorials in EXperimentalisT Interactive LEarning

Abstract

Tutorials for EXperimentalisT Interactive LEarning (TEXTILE) is an interactive semi-linear module-based curriculum for training students at various educational levels on data science methodologies currently utilized by research laboratories. We show how we developed our eleven module TEXTILE program to train 15 students from high school, undergraduate, and graduate degree programs in laboratory analysis pipelines. Additionally, we discuss impact of the TEXTILE program in retention of students within the lab, chemical engineering, and data science.

Author Biographies

Hawley Helmbrecht, University of Washington

Hawley Helmbrecht is a Ph.D. candidate in the department of chemical engineering at the University of Washington completing the advanced data science option. Her research interests focus on developing image processing pipelines for quantifying brain cell morphology. She has served as teaching assistant for senior capstone design and mass and energy balance courses in UW Chemical Engineering and mentored fourteen students in her research area.

Elizabeth Nance, University of Washington

Elizabeth Nance is the Jagjeet and Janice Bindra Career Development Endowed Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington, with adjunct appointments in Radiology, Bioengineering, and the eScience Institute. She serves as the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies in Chemical Engineering and founded Women in Chemical Engineering (WChE) in 2016. Her research is focused on technology development for the treatment of pediatric and brain-related diseases.
