Experience with Teaching Design: Do We Blend the Old With the New?

Abstract

A two-course, senior-year, capstone, process-design sequence is described.  The first of the two courses is an introductory design course and covers the basics of costing, economics, and materials of construction.  The second course incorporates a fairly comprehensive plant-design project.  Students are guided through the design project by a series of assignments. Use of chemical process flowsheet simulators in these courses is discussed.  Student feedback concerning the courses has been generally positive.

Lawrance Flach, University of Dayton

Lawrance Flach, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Dayton, has bachelors and masters degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and a PhD from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He conducts research in the areas of process modeling, dynamics, and control.
