Symposium

Call for Papers

Deadline for Abstracts: November 18, 2019

Symposium: March 27–28, 2020

The FSU Art History faculty and graduate students invite students currently working toward an MA or a PhD to submit abstracts of papers for presentation at our 37th Annual Art History Graduate Student Symposium, which will be held on Friday afternoon, March 27, and Saturday, March 28, 2020. The keynote speaker this year is Charlene Villaseñor Black, Professor in the Department of Art History and the César E. Chávez Department of Chicana/o Studies, University of California, Los Angeles.

We welcome papers that represent an advanced stage of research from any area of the history of art, architecture, and cultural heritage studies. Paper sessions will take place on Friday afternoon and Saturday, with each paper followed by critical discussion. Papers will then be considered for inclusion in Athanor, our internationally-distributed journal.

The deadline for submitting abstracts (maximum 500 words) is November 18, 2019. Please include the title of the talk and briefly describe the relationship of your talk to your larger program of research.

Send the abstract by email to:

The Symposium is hosted annually by the FSU Art History graduate students and faculty and managed by Symposium Coordinator Prof. Kyle Killian with the assistance of the graduate Art History Association officers, who also serve as session chairs.

Papers presented at the Symposium are considered for publication in Athanor, an internationally distributed periodical published annually by the FSU Museum of Fine Arts Press. In the interest of conservation and innovation, we are transforming Athanor to an online publication. We will follow up with details when we release Athanor XXXVII during Open Access Week in late October.
