A Heated Debate Has Developed Recently Concerning “Stand Your Ground”

Abstract

The article examines the expansion of the Castle Doctrine, through the passage of Stand Your Ground (SYG) statutes, and the positive or negative effects from implementing such statutes. The article draws upon historical cases and discusses research conducted on the topic of whether or not SYG statutes discourage crime. The views of both critics and supporters are presented as well. The article concludes that SYG statutes have had negative affects following their implementation in to law.

Emanouil Petrov, Florida Atlantic University

FAU College of Business and majoring in Finance. Emanouil expects to graduate in May 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Finance and a Minor in Business Law.
